Comet Lulin 2007N3: February 2009

Comet Lulin was discovered in July of 2007. The comet put on quite a show for northern hemisphere observers in February and March of 2009. Living in New Hampshire has its drawbacks when it comes to astronomy during the winter months. Because of poor weather, I only had one night of photography to record the comet. I had to stand in snow under very cold conditions to photograph this comet. On Februar 28, 2009, using a 200mm F2.8 lens, I managed to get five images of three minutes each. Stacking them produced this image of what I call, "the Q-tip comet".

By the time the weather improved, the comet had faded from view.
